Essential items

1. マイナンバーカード (My Number Card)

The physical IC card — NOT just the notification letter (通知カード). You need the actual plastic card with your photo. If you don't have one yet, apply at your city/ward office (takes 1-2 months to receive).

2. Smartphone with NFC or IC card reader

You need a way to read your マイナンバーカード. Most modern smartphones (iPhone 7+, most Android phones sold in Japan) have NFC capability. Alternatively, use a USB IC card reader (available on Amazon Japan for ¥2,000-3,000). The smartphone method is easier.

3. マイナンバーカード PINs

Browser translation

While the 確定申告書等作成コーナー is mostly in Japanese, you can use your browser's built-in translation (right-click → "Translate to English" in Chrome). Submitting 送信

Once you've reviewed everything and confirmed the numbers are correct:

  1. Enter your refund bank account — If you're getting a refund (還付), enter your bank account details. The account name must match the name on your tax return exactly (usually your name in katakana as registered at the bank).
  2. Enter your マイナンバー — The 12-digit number on your マイナンバーカード. This is required for submission.

After submission 提出後

If you're getting a refund (還付)

Refunds from e-Tax filing are typically processed within 2-3 weeks (much faster than the 1-2 months for paper filing). The money will be deposited directly into the bank account you specified. You can check the status by logging into e-Tax and viewing your 送信結果 (submission results).

If you owe additional tax (納付)

You have several payment options:

  • ダイレクト納付 (direct payment) — Pay directly from your bank account via e-Tax
  • クレジットカード — Pay by credit card online (small fee applies)
  • QRコード / バーコード — Generate a payment code and pay at a convenience store (up to ¥300,000)
  • 銀行振替 — Bank transfer using the payment slip

The payment deadline is the same as the filing deadline — March 15 (unless you set up 振替納税, which extends it about one month). Late payment triggers penalty interest.

Keep your records

Even though you don't attach documents to an e-Tax filing, you must keep all supporting documents for 5-7 years (depending on the type). The tax office can request to see your 源泉徴収票, receipts, and deduction certificates at any time.

FAQ よくある質問

Can I file in English?

Partially. The 確定申告書等作成コーナー interface is primarily in Japanese, but some screens have English annotations. You can use your browser's built-in translation to help navigate. The actual tax forms and submissions are in Japanese — but since you're mostly entering numbers, it's manageable with this guide as a reference. The 国税庁 has published some English-language guides for the basic filing process.

What if I make a mistake after submitting?

You can file an amendment. If you paid too much tax, file a 更正の請求 (request for correction) — you have 5 years from the filing deadline. If you paid too little, file a 修正申告 (amended return) as soon as possible to minimize penalties. Both can be done through e-Tax.

I don't have a マイナンバーカード. Can I still use e-Tax?

There's an alternative: the ID/パスワード方式 (ID/password method). You need to visit a tax office in person once to register, bringing your ID. After that, you can file online with just a username and password — no card reader needed. However, the government is pushing everyone toward マイナンバーカード, so getting one is recommended.

Can I file for previous years through e-Tax?
